HOW TO KEEP YOUR AIR CONDITIONING COSTS DOWN

Air conditioning is a fantastic and versatile way to improve the climate in your home or office. It can be used to both cool and heat your property which makes it perfect for use in the UK. Many people worry about the costs of using air conditioning, however it can be an extremely affordable solution. We have put together a few tips on how to keep your air conditioning costs as low as possible.

Shield from the sun

Most heat that accumulates inside a house comes directly from the sun shining onto the roof or through windows. On sunny days, keep the curtains closed to prevent the greenhouse effect. It may be worth installing screens on windows that catch a lot of sunlight. For a long term solution you could plant trees around the building to provide extra cover from the sun. If the trees or shrubs shade your physical air conditioner then you will also boost the efficiency of your air conditioner. On chilly winter days, closing curtains prevents heat escaping through the glass and the same practice should be used.

Buy a fan

Your air conditioning unit works most effectively when there is plenty of circulation in the home. Invest in a fan to help your air conditioning unit work at its optimum levels. If you do not have a fan slightly open two windows on the opposite sides of the house to promote a small draught.

Use the temperature settings accordingly

Many people waste lots of energy by not being smart with their air conditioner’s thermostat. Think about the climate you realistically need to feel comfortable. On a hot day it is fine to get comfortable and lower the number, but rise it again if you are going out or are away from home. Having air conditioning blasting whilst no one is using it can really put costs up. You can save 5 to 15 percent on your air-conditioning bills by raising the temperature setting on your thermostat when you’re away and don’t need cooling, according to the Department of Energy.

Be careful when cooking

The kitchen is a huge heat source for any home (or in fact business!) Many restaurants often need their air conditioning maintained or replaced because of the ongoing abuse from stove-top boiling and oven baking cooking methods. If it is a stifling day then be prepared and use the microwave, barbeque or have cold food instead. After cooking, turn on the kitchen exhaust to remove heat and moisture in the air. On the other hand, on cooler winter days, preparing a stew or soup can help heat up your home.

Keeping your unit well maintained

This is a very important factor when looking at the outgoing costs of air conditioning. Having a blocked filter can really stop air conditioning working effectively and make your bills larger.
